“La Que Está Detrás de Mí”

“The One Who Stands Behind Me”
A short, supernatural documentary by Amira Stone

Motherhood, mechanics and spirituality converge as a neighborhood cerrajero recalls a tale of unlocking a door that seemed impossible to open.

“La Que Está Detrás de Mí” (The One Who Stands Behind Me) is a short, experimental documentary set in Centro Habana, Cuba. It takes place in the home of cerrajero Alberto and his grandmother Lurde. Always full with conversation, ritual, clientele and neighborhood children whom the two treat as their own, the space functions as a temple, local shop and community destination. Alberto narrates a story of divine intervention as he welds at his workstation – home to hand-made machinery, keys, herbs, flowers and rum – entranced by mechanics and guided by the orishas.
